Collected Wisdom from 2014
2014 has been an exciting year for The School of Life.
Alongside our usual classes and therapies we’ve held special events, from singalongs to sermons, and hosted speakers who’ve shared their wisdom on all aspects of life. We’ve also launched two new tools, our Youtube Channel and The Book of Life, both aiming to address the issues we face everyday and to share knowledge through short films and thought provoking articles.
Thinking about food
Food has been on our minds a lot this year. This Autumn we hosted a special event with Nigella Lawson, who explored the meaning of food, and extolled the simple pleasure of a soft boiled egg on toast. Meanwhile we’ve also explored philosophy into the kitchen and discovered recipes for every mood in Food As Therapy.

LOVE: GOING RIGHT
When you should hold on…
We can’t pretend that we’ve ‘solved’ love, but this year we hope that we’ve made a small contribution to making relationships a tiny bit saner. Even the most loving long-term relationships hit hurdles, so we’ve examined how to deal with a sulker anddiffuse an argument, and even how pessimism can save love. And if you’ve only just met someone? Enjoy the honeymoon!

LOVE: GOING WRONG
… And when you should let go
If you’re facing the end of a relationship then take comfort in the fact you’re not alone – there are few problems as universal as strife in love. At least art has your back. Whether you find yourself facing a break up, or deciding to stick by a dull partner, there’s a book or a painting that knows how you feel.

Finding meaning through art
In an increasingly secular world, we are always looking for ways to give our lives greater meaning. This year we’ve explored the power of art to enrich our lives, from its ability toinspire our own creativity, to the effect colour can have on our moods. What is art for? We think it’s for helping us live better lives.

Changing the world
We believe that before you can change the world, you have to understand it. That’s why we’ve spent 2014 asking questions. What exactly did Karl Marx stand for? Who were the feminists? Why are some countries poor and others rich? Knowledge is power – the more we understand, the more we can change for the better.

WORKING IT OUT
Discover a work/life balance
Balancing the demands of work with life remained a hot topic this year, and it’s one we’re still puzzling over. In the summer. Arianna Huffington shared her vision of a new definition of success, focusing on personal growth as well as money and power. Elsewhere we’ve explored misemployment and the emotional toll of being in the wrong job.
